Suit and clothing alterations on the Gold Coast: what’s worth altering (and what isn’t)

A good alteration can turn a suit you never wear into the one you reach for first. A bad one, or the wrong one, is money spent on a garment that will never sit right. As a Gold Coast tailor, we see both, and the difference usually comes down to knowing what can be changed before you start.

Here's our honest guide to what's worth altering, from our studio in Mermaid Beach.

Alterations that are almost always worth it

  • Trouser hems. The most common and most effective fix. The right break changes how the whole suit looks. Bring the shoes you'll wear with them.

  • Jacket sleeves. Shortening or lengthening sleeves so a little shirt cuff shows is quick and makes an off-the-rack jacket look far more expensive.

  • Taking in the waist. On jackets and trousers, taking in the waist or seat sharpens the silhouette without changing the character of the garment.

  • Dress and formalwear fitting. Taking in the side seams, adjusting straps and hemming formal dresses for a wedding, ball or the races.

  • Repairs. Replacing buttons properly, fixing linings and mending seams keeps a good garment in use for years.

Alterations that are rarely worth it

Some changes are technically possible but rarely look right, and we'll tell you so before you spend the money:

  • Jacket shoulders. If the shoulders are too wide or too narrow, the jacket is the wrong size. Rebuilding shoulders is complex, expensive and often still shows.

  • Making a jacket much bigger. There's only so much seam allowance inside. If a jacket is tight across the chest, letting it out may give you a little, but not a whole size.

  • Jacket length. Shortening a jacket throws off the pocket positions and the proportions of the whole garment.

When the fit problem is in the shoulders or the chest, a custom suit from $1,100 is often better value than heavy alterations.

Men's tailor alterations: the most common requests

For men's suits, the alterations we're asked for most are trouser hems and break, jacket sleeve length, taking in the jacket waist, tapering trousers through the leg, and adjusting the seat. Done well, these five changes make an off-the-rack suit look made for you. If the shoulders or chest are wrong, that's usually the point where a custom suit becomes better value.

How long do alterations take?

Most alterations take 5–7 business days. Every job is assessed and quoted before work begins, so you know exactly what you're paying for. If you have an event coming up, tell us the date when you book and we'll be upfront about what's achievable.

This is also our answer when someone needs a suit in under 2 weeks. A new suit takes 4–8 weeks to make, so the fastest route to looking sharp is often to make a suit you already own fit properly.

Op-shop find? 20% off the alterations

We're committed to reducing clothing waste, and some of the best-made garments on the Gold Coast are sitting on op-shop racks waiting for someone to give them a second life. Through our Second Life Tailoring initiative, we take 20% off the alterations on any jacket, suit, trousers or dress you bought from an op shop or charity store.

Just bring the original op-shop tag or receipt when you drop the garment off. Proof of purchase must be dated within 6 months, and the discount applies to alteration labour. Full terms are on our homepage.

A tip when you're browsing: look for natural fibres (wool, linen, cotton), check the shoulders fit you, and check the inside seams have enough fabric to work with. If those three are right, almost everything else can be tailored.

Getting the most from your fitting

  1. Wear or bring the right shoes and the type of shirt you'll wear with the garment.

  2. Stand naturally. Don't hold your breath or stand up straighter than usual. We want to fit you as you actually stand.

  3. Tell us how you'll wear it. Sitting at a desk all day, dancing at a wedding, standing in court: it changes how much ease we leave.
