The Gold Coast is one of Australia's favourite places to get married. Beach ceremonies, hinterland vineyards, rooftop receptions in Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise: the settings are beautiful, and they ask a lot of a suit. It has to look sharp in photos, stay comfortable through a long day in the heat, and fit you properly from the first look to the last dance.
Here's what we tell every groom who walks into our Mermaid Beach studio.
Start earlier than you think
A new suit takes 4–6 weeks for custom or made-to-measure, and about 8 weeks for a bespoke commission. That's the making time. On top of that you want a buffer for fittings that clash with work, a groomsman who's slow to get measured, or a cloth that's briefly out of stock at the mill.
Our advice:
3–4 months out: book your consultation, settle on a look and choose cloth.
2–3 months out: get the groomsmen measured. One look across the whole party, fitted to every build.
4–6 weeks out: fittings.
1–2 weeks out: collection, with time to spare for any final tweaks.
If your wedding is less than 2 weeks away, a new suit isn't realistic. We'll be honest about that, and we can usually make a suit you already own fit properly instead.
Buying vs hiring a wedding suit
Suit hire is popular on the Gold Coast, and for some weddings it makes sense. But it's worth knowing what you're trading.
A hire suit is built to fit as many people as possible, which means it fits nobody perfectly. Sleeves and hems are pinned or roughly adjusted, the shoulders are whatever size was closest, and the cloth has to survive dozens of wears and dry cleans. In photos, it often shows: excess fabric at the back, collars standing away from the neck, trousers bunching at the ankle.
A tailored suit is made for your body, in cloth you chose, and you keep it. Many of our grooms wear their wedding suit again to other weddings, the races, work events and anniversaries, which makes the cost per wear very different to hire. If you choose a versatile colour such as navy, charcoal or a rich green, it becomes the best suit in your wardrobe rather than a one-day costume.
Dressing for Gold Coast heat
Most Gold Coast weddings happen in warm, humid weather, and many are outdoors. A few things make a big difference:
Natural fibres. Merino wool breathes and handles moisture far better than polyester blends. Linen and linen blends work well for beach ceremonies.
Lighter construction. A half-lined jacket with softer shoulders is noticeably cooler than a fully lined, heavily structured one.
Waistcoats. A three-piece looks fantastic and lets you take the jacket off for the reception while still looking finished.
Colour. Lighter shades like cream, sand and soft greys suit daytime beach and garden weddings. Deep burgundy, forest green and navy look rich at evening and hinterland venues.
Dressing the groomsmen
Matching a wedding party is where tailoring really earns its keep. Groomsmen come in every shape, and a single off-the-rack size run rarely suits all of them. We measure each person individually and build one coordinated look that fits every build, whether that's matched suits, matched waistcoats with shirtsleeves, or the groom in a contrasting colour.
Which option is right for your wedding?
Custom suit, from $1,100: a great choice for groomsmen and for grooms who want a sharp, well-fitted suit on a sensible budget.
Made-to-measure, from $1,400 three-piece: our most popular choice for grooms. Your pattern is proven on a fitting garment before your cloth is cut.
Bespoke, from $3,500: for a groom who wants every detail his own and has at least 8 weeks.
Kilts and Prince Charlie jackets: for Scottish and highland weddings, quoted at consultation.
