One premium suit or two budget suits? How to decide

Quick answer: If you're starting out, buy one well-fitted suit in a versatile colour first, then add a second. One good suit that fits looks better, lasts longer and costs less per wear than two budget suits. The exception is if you wear a suit every working day: then two suits you can rotate will last longer than one worn daily, and both should fit properly.

The case for one premium suit

  • Fit beats quantity. Nobody notices that you own two suits. They notice whether the one you're wearing fits.

  • Better cloth lasts longer. Natural wool recovers from creasing and resists shine. Budget polyester blends wear out faster and look tired sooner.

  • Lower cost per wear. A suit you love gets worn. A suit that never feels right stays in the wardrobe.

  • It can be altered over time. A well-made suit has seam allowance built in, so it can be adjusted if your weight changes.

The case for two (or more) suits

Wool needs rest. If you wear a suit to work every day, rotating at least two lets each one recover its shape between wears, which helps both last longer. In that case, buying two cheap suits isn't the answer: buy two good ones over time.

A smarter way to build a suit wardrobe

  1. Suit one: navy. Works for business, weddings, interviews and evenings. If you only own one suit, make it navy.

  2. Suit two: charcoal. Slightly more formal, and rotates perfectly with navy for work.

  3. Suit three: something with personality. A rich burgundy, forest green or a subtle check, for when you want to stand out.

With made-to-measure, your pattern stays on file after the first suit, so each additional suit is faster and more predictable. Read more in our guide to building a capsule wardrobe.

What "premium" should mean

Premium doesn't mean the most expensive suit you can find. It means a suit that fits you, in good natural cloth, built to last. At our Gold Coast studio that starts with a custom suit from $1,100 or made-to-measure from $1,400. You can see how the options compare in our suit price guide.
