I'm Jay - founder and head tailor at Praetorian Bespoke in Mermaid Beach. I've spent over a decade in tailoring, and the one thing I couldn't stop thinking about was this: most people who think they've experienced bespoke clothing haven't. They've experienced a standard pattern being adjusted to approximate them. That's not the same thing.

Three years ago, I started Praetorian Bespoke to do it properly, which means doing it myself, from the first conversation to the final fitting. Every garment is designed and built by our in-house designers for one person.

A great tailored suit should be personal, unhurried, and made for the specific person wearing it - not for a size chart or a production schedule. When you wear something built for your body and your life, you don't just look different. You move differently. You carry yourself differently. The room responds to you differently.

That's not a marketing line. It's something we watch happen, commission after commission.

The word gets used loosely, so let's be direct. A bespoke garment is drafted from scratch - every line and angle shaped to your body, your posture, the way you stand. There is no existing pattern being altered to approximate you. The pattern doesn't exist until we make it, and we make it for you alone.

We also offer made-to-measure, which works from a standard block adjusted to your measurements. Both have their place. They are not the same thing, and you deserve to understand the difference before you commit.

There's no pressure when you walk into the studio and no rush. We talk first - about what you need, what you like, and what you want to feel like in what you're wearing. We show you fabrics, explain your options honestly, and help you make decisions you'll feel confident about long after you leave.

You'll walk out knowing more about tailoring than when you walked in. And eventually - when the garment is finished, and you put it on - you'll understand something that's genuinely hard to explain until you've experienced it.

At Praetorian, our mission is rooted in a lifelong commitment to supporting working-class Australians — from farmers and textile workers to skilled craftsmen and women. Australia produces some of the finest raw textile materials in the world, yet the vast majority is exported, leaving the local industry underserved. We believe that keeping this industry alive starts with doing business close to home — partnering with local farmers and craftspeople so they can support their families, sustain their livelihoods, and preserve a craft worth protecting.

Our goal is to be an active, meaningful part of every step in that process.

We are building toward this through a clear, deliberate path: beginning as a one-on-one bespoke service, scaling into an off-the-rack offering, and then moving into manufacturing — our first major milestone. From there, we will grow into a fully Australian-made business. The next landmark on that journey is the opening of our own textile mill: producing high-quality fabrics for Praetorian and other local businesses, and working directly with Australian farmers to create a product that is world-class in quality and globally recognised.

We have a long road ahead, but with the right strategy and an unwavering commitment to this country and its people, we believe it is well within reach.
