Is a custom suit worth it? When it pays off, and when it doesn’t

Quick answer: A custom suit is worth it if you wear suits regularly, find off-the-rack never fits you, or need a suit for a day that really matters. You get a suit cut to your measurements, in cloth you choose, that lasts longer and looks better than most ready-made suits at the same price after alterations. If you'll wear a suit once and never again, hire or a simple off-the-rack suit may be enough.

When a custom suit is worth it

  • Off the rack never fits you. Broad shoulders with a slim waist, a longer torso, an athletic seat, or arms longer or shorter than average. A custom suit starts from your body, not a size.

  • You wear a suit for work. Clients and colleagues notice fit. Research on clothing and first impressions suggests well-fitted tailoring changes how people are perceived. We cover this in the meeting starts before you speak.

  • It's for a wedding or milestone. You'll look at the photos for the rest of your life.

  • You're already paying for alterations. Once you add sleeves, hems and taking in the waist to a $700 suit, a custom suit often costs only a little more.

When it might not be worth it

  • You need a suit in under 2 weeks. A new custom suit takes 4–5 weeks; alterations to a suit you own are faster.

  • You'll wear it once. Hire or a simple suit with good alterations may make more sense.

  • Your weight is about to change significantly. Wait until you're settled.

Custom vs off the rack: what's different

  • Fit: built from your measurements and refined at a fitting, rather than a standard size adjusted afterwards.

  • Cloth: you choose it, usually a natural fibre like Australian Merino.

  • Details: you choose lapels, buttons, lining and pockets.

  • Longevity: a suit that fits well creases less, wears more evenly and gets worn more.
