How much should you spend on a suit?
A useful rule: spend according to how often you'll wear it.
Once or twice a year (weddings, funerals, the races): a well-fitted custom suit in a versatile colour such as navy or charcoal, from about $1,100.
Weekly for work: made-to-measure in a durable cloth, from about $1,400. Your pattern stays on file, so the next suit is faster and easier.
A once-in-a-lifetime event or a signature piece: bespoke, from about $3,500, with at least 8 weeks to make it.
Think in cost per wear. A $1,400 suit worn 100 times over five years costs $14 a wear. A $500 suit that gets worn 10 times because it never feels right costs $50 a wear.
What you're actually paying for
Cloth. Natural fibres like Australian Merino wool breathe, recover from creasing and last for years. Cheaper suits often use polyester blends that shine and trap heat, which you'll notice on the Gold Coast.

Signs you're paying too much, or too little
You're probably paying too little if the price includes no fitting, the cloth isn't named, or the jacket is fused and stiff. You may be paying too much if you're paying for a brand rather than fit, or for bespoke when a made-to-measure suit would fit you just as well. A good tailor will tell you when the simpler option is enough.
